Veterans Programs

We offer two unique opportunities for veterans
through PATH Intl.’s Equine Assisted Services for Heroes program.

Riding for Veterans

Veterans and their families are welcomed into our inclusive riding community—at no cost. Participants groom, lead, andride horses alongside others of similar ability levels, guided by certified instructors and a supportive team.

Each session builds confidence, improves balance and coordination, and offers a fun, engaging way to destress outdoors. No previous riding experience is required—just a willingness to try something new.

Groundwork Program

Some veterans prefer not to ride—and that’s okay. Whether due to a disability, personal preference, or our weight restrictions, our groundwork-only program provides an equally powerful connection to horses.

Held on Friday mornings, this structured group focuses on grooming, leading, and mindful interaction with our horses. Participants experience reduced stress, increased self-awareness, and deepened connection—all without ever mounting up.

Why Horses and Veterans?

Horses are highly reactive and mimic human emotion requiring calm, clear, intentional communication which promote awareness, self-control, and impulse modulation. Working with horses offers instant and constant feedback to participants, requires physical strength and balance, and is highly motivational, combining to make an exceptionally effective environment for leadership and personal growth.
— Horses and Humans Foundation
Horses can sense your emotions and feelings… If you are tense, they are going to be tense. If you are anxious, they are going to be anxious. Especially, if you are in pain, they are going to sense you are in pain as well.

Volunteering

Many of our veteran riders become volunteers at GallopNYC to continue growing their skills. Volunteer to help with barn work or support our riders during therapeutic riding lessons by leading or walking alongside the horse and supporting riders. Learn more about volunteer opportunities here.
